5. | ![]() ![]() Notes: Ann and Bill had a fireworks stand for many years on their property. The cellar would be stacked high with cartons of fireworks. It was always fun to go up there and hang around the fireworks stand. How thrilled we were when they thought we were old enough to help sell the fireworks! On the Fourth of July, Bill would set off a bunch of fireworks for us kids. Ann was an excellent cook. We had coffee and her famous pies every night when we visited. We always had Thanksgiving at their house. The only family that wasn't there were the Hancocks. Leonard and Mildred and their kids would go to Manchester to her parents for dinner but would arrive at Ann and Bill's house after supper. The party would go on until the wee hours of the night. We played football every Thanksgiving, rain, sun or snow after we ate which usually started at 2 PM. Esther and Tom would always play with us kids. Sometimes, Edwin and Bill would join in. The other adults watched from the window in the comfort of the house. 6. | ![]() ![]() Notes: Twin sister to Jennie Johnson. There is no record of a birth certificate. On Annie's death certificate, parents' ages are listed as 33 and 26. Cause of death was listed as premature birth. |
7. | ![]() ![]() Notes: Twin to sister Annie Johnson. There is no record of a birth certificate. Jennie's death certificate has the same information as Annie's. We have searched extensively for gravesites for the twins without success. There is an old cemetery in Cromwell that we didn't even know existed. We have checked the records there also with the woman that has kept the records for eons but have had no luck. They tell us that they could have been buried in the back yard. Also in those days, people would often be offered space for a "preemie" in a family member's or friend's family plot. In that case, there would not be a headstone, nor a record. Premature births were, of course, quite common and people did not have the money to purchase a cemetery plot. |

Notes: The story, as told to me, was that he had fallen down the cellar stairs as a child (6 years old sticks in my mind but it may have been at a younger age) and that he had been deaf since that time. In retrospect, I wonder if he could have had a severe ear infection or a childhood disease that left him deaf. This affected his speech as it had happened at such an early age. He was not totally deaf and could communicate although one had to speak loudly to him. |
